Watermelon, pool parties, beach days *sigh* I just love the summer season. However, you always have to be ready! Whether it’s sunscreen in your purse or a soccer ball in the trunk of your car.
1.Ahh my eyes!
I love the sun but there are also risks when you don’t protect yourself. Let’s start off with your eyes. These days you can buy sunglasses anywhere (for example: Forever21, Dollar Store, Sunglasses Stores, and more). Prices from sunglasses can range anywhere from from 10 dollars to 200 dollars. Although it’s a great fashion accessory it also has an important purpose and a steeper price doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better for your eyes. Sunglasses are made to protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays. Side effects of not protecting your eyes can range anywhere from Cataracts, to Macular degeneration. When purchasing your next pair of sunglasses make sure they say on the sticker or tag that they block out 99 to 100% of UVA and UVB radiation.
I used to think that if I don’t get burnt and look like a lobster, I have nothing to fear. The truth is, applying sunscreen is extremely important. Make sure you stay protected to avoid things like skin cancer. Make sure you apply sunblock with SPF between 15 and 50+. It is a defence against getting too much harmful UV radiation. Stay away from Sunscreen that has vitamin A. Vitamin A and Mr. Sun are not good friends. Tumors and lesions can form on the skin if you lather Vitamin A on. Make sure your sunscreen does not have oxybenzone. It is a synthetic estrogen that can affect the hormone system due to it’s capability of penetrating the skin. Instead, try to find sunblock with zinc oxide, 3% avobenzone or Mexoryl SX. If you use lip balm or makeup make sure it has SPF.
3. Stay Cool
Yes, she’s a cute old lady but most people want to avoid signs of aging (although, I’m not sure since it’s a natural part of life). Anyhow, hydration is important all year around but especially in the summer. Staying hydrated and drinking lots of water gives you great skin and healthy organs. However, drinking water is also important so you don’t dehydrate and pass out. Carry a water bottle in your bag, purse, trunk, car and fill it up with water whenever you can and stay hydrated. If you have a hard time drinking water, why not some infused water? Walmart and plenty of places online sell infused water bottles. Add some mint, cucumber or strawberries in your water for your very own non-alcoholic, hydrating drink. You can also place a tea bag (such as green tea) and some mint in a pitcher with some water. Then place it in the fridge to cool. And pour some in your bottle for your very own, sugar-free, refreshing, iced tea. Coconut water, Gatorade are other ways to make sure you stay hydrated in the heat.
4. Tan Lines
Whether you choose to wear a bikini, tankini, burkini, speedo, etc. always be prepared. Throw a bathing suit in the trunk of your car or keep it in your bag or purse. You might be at work all day and it’s raining and then it’s bright and sunny after work. Why not have a bathing suit on you for an evening at the pool or by the beach? Or how about on those hot summer, spontaneous, random days out where you pass by the beach or a public pool and say you wish you were in the water? If you always have a bathing suit with you, you no longer have to wish that you were in the water because you’d already be jumping in and cooling off!
This monkey forgot his towel. You don’t have to be this monkey. Always throw a spare towel in the trunk of your car or in your bag.
Get your mind out of the gutter, you! Always keep a soccer ball , football or beach ball in your car (big or small). Going for a BBQ at a park with some family or friends and want to keep yourselves entertained by the time the food is ready? Why not play a soccer game or football game in the meantime. At the beach with your friends and you notice a volleyball net. What do you do? You play a game of beach volleyball because you were the smart friend that came prepared ! And if you don’t like playing with balls, then pack a frisby, for a fun frisby game outdoors.
7. Happy Feet
Be prepared and keep spare sandals or shoes at the office, in your purse, bag or trunk, for a fun day after work or on the weekend. No need to wait for Michael Koreos.
As lovely as Mr. Sun can be, he also wants to show us how bright he can be. Mr. Sun isn’t humble that way, he doesn’t care if we’re burning hot. But little does Mr. Sun know that we can protect ourselves because we’re smart and don’t want to get hurt. Make sure you keep a spare hat or umbrella in your purse, office, or bag. Remember, too much UV rays aren’t good for you!
9. Shoo fly don’t bother me
If you’re anything like me, you might not just hate bugs because they’re annoying…you might be allergic to them too. Make sure to spray on some bug repellant spray before heading outdoors (especially if you’re going hiking, camping or you”ll be by a lake). And always keep an after bite pen on you (in your bag, purse or car).
10. What’s that Smell?
It’s hot, people are sweaty and smelly. Especially if you commute on a busy train or bus. Once the arms go up to hold rails, that’s when you think to yourself…WHY ME? PUT YOUR ARM DOWN! Please be considerate to your fellow commuter and humans around you. Stay clean and fresh. Shower and apply deodorant. Don’t take a french shower and drown yourself in body spray or perfume only.
11. Walk in the Park?
The Alpaca will bring lunch for the picnic, but where shall you sit? It’s all about preparation. Keep a spare blanket in your trunk for those last minute picnics at the park with Miss Alpaca or at the beach for a bonfire.
12. I’m hot and I’m cold
Cold in the office? Cold at night at the park? No worries. You’re the prepared one in the group, remember? Remember the blanket you packed earlier (#11) it will now double up as a source of warmth on those cold summer nights. Keep a cardigan at the office or in your work locker at all times. Keep a cardigan or hoodie in your car at all times as well.
When I say Jammin, so many things cross my mind. The amazing song by the late Bob Marley, Jammin. In order to enjoy Jammin by Bob Marley at the beach or at the park, you’ll need to buy a bluetooth speaker. However, in order to do that, you’ll need to buy a portable, bluetooth speaker. Keep it in your purse, bag or car for those fun days outdoors with your friends or family. Enjoy some good music and good company and there you have it, a lovely summer !
